Black Liberation Theology

There has been a lot of talk in the news about Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the now retired minister from Trinity UCC in Chicago. Rev. Wright is most famous for being Obama’s minister but a number of other prominent African Americans also belong to Rev. Wright’s former congregation (Oprah Winfrey was at one point a member). Rev. Wright is a scholar and preacher in the tradition of black liberation theology. Black liberation theology is not well known outside of certain segments of the black church and seminaries/divinity schools/religious studies departments. Before attacking Rev. Wright I think people have an obligation to familiarize themselves with the tradition he is coming out of. One of the most articulate proponent of black liberation theology is Union professor James Cone. I found a great interview with him on Bill Moyers Journal that is worth checking out. It can be viewed at http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/11232007/watch.html

There is also an interesting exchange between Rev. Wright and Sean Hannity from Fox News available on You Tube. It might offer some perspective on why Hannity seems to be out for Rev. Wright’s blood. Check it out below…
